Session 87, September 10th, 2023 - GALADOR'S QUEST: INTO THE LION'S PAW PART 2, THE RESCUE OF GALADOR

We are going on a rescue mission.

The Cleric (2nd) that reported the location and sent Galador on this quest was under bedrest and to accompany us, he wants a half share of treasure. We decline to bring him with us this time.

We head out to the dungeon which is located on the side of a hill, to the south east of Starling. We find a place to tie up our horses.


We are not in the encounter until we approach so Adaeril casts Strength on himself. The Strength spell lasts for 24 turns and he gets an 18 Strength.


ROLL SURPRISE

The forces out front have been alerted to our approach.

  • There are 4 Light Horsemen (Brigands) that have drawn their longswords…nvm, this was changed to longbows.
  • They have 4 War Dogs.

The encounter distance is at 21“. As the Horsemen draw their longbows as Adaeril charges. The other Brigands leap onto their Horses and charge.

The 2 Warhorses they are riding are repulsed by Jacob's ring and charge off in two separate directions. Now the charge is at 32”.

  • Adaeril does 10 damage in melee.
  • Rhinock does 10 damage.

The two mounted Brigands are killed! The 4 War Dogs need to save versus Jacob's ring and succeed.

Two of the Dogs attack Rhinock but miss. Rhinock gets 14 attacks against the Brigands due to sweep attacks and WE OBLITERATE THEM with over 100 damage in one round.

COMBAT ENDS


The mud and grass in the area was reveals that the ground vegetation was destroyed. As we approach the door, we see that it has an interesting handle, shaped like a crater. Inside are 3 levers.

On a quick note for Erias, Assassins can disguise themselves but they also get Backstab at level 1.

Erias moves the right lever to the left. There is no sound, but there is some resistance to this. As he manipulates the levers further, there is a large grinding noise deep inside the door. A loud echoing of stone on stone and a heavy grinding noise. We feel the door itself shake and then it stops suddenly. Erias continues, moving it up and down, and there is no noise at all.

He moves the left lever to the left, then moves the top one up and down, and there is no more sound. Next, he moves the right lever to the left and a grinding noise is heard. After further tests, finally a different noise is heard.

This seems to work as follows:

R R D - RESET
L L U - Did not work.
L R D - Smooth operating machinery sound then a long operation completes. Once things are set in place, there is a mechanical tension.
R L U - The final tumbler which causes the door to unseal!

The door swings open an inch and we can see the flickering of torchlight beyond. It takes us 10 minutes of time to unlock this door until we finally open the door with a crowbar.


ROLL SURPRISE

The door swings open revealing a torchlit corridor. We find another set of double doors made of stone and several more Brigands. There are 12 sling shots fired at Delemir who has AC 3/4.

  • Delimir is safe!
  • Rhinock is safe!

All of the Slingers miss! The Longbow Archers are wearing plate mail and they get 6 shots each. There are 6 shots at Rhinock who takes 5 damage and 3 shots on Adaeril who takes 7 damage. Adaeril casts Magic Missile on a plate wearer and does 4 damage.

There is AC 2/3 for the Plate Armor wearing Brigand. The arrows strike the same Fighter wearing plate for 6 damage. Jacob is at AC -1/3 with a longbow and they all miss him!

Rhinock hears a mechanical noise from slits to the sides. His foot depresses a panel and 4 arrows are shot out but both miss. He steps onto a second panel and there is a stone on metal snap, something is released! Suddenly, the wall goes to close on Rhinock! It slams shut on Rhinock, sealing him off from the hallway. He then takes 12 damage! Two arrows come from slits up ahead and he takes another 9 damage from more arrows. Rhinock does 10 damage to the Brigand which manages to cut down the Fighter in a single blow!

Rhinock has a -2 AC but both of the enemy Fighters miss him. At that point, the stone door grinds open. behind Rhinock. Erias steps on a pressure plate to open the door and 2 arrows fire out once again. Erias has AC 4/7 but both arrows miss. Another arrow hits for 1 damage.

Rhinock does 8 damage to the other plate wearing Fighter but they are not killed. Delimir has the door held as Adaeril searches for a movable brick or lever in the alcove. Jacob and Erias also look for hidden buttons and begin tapping the walls.

Meanwhile, Rhinock takes 3 damage. In retaliation, Rhinock does a sweep attack and must hit AC 7/7 to hit, he hits 6 of the Slingers doing 10, 8, 6, 6, 9, and 6 damage each. 6 Slingers die!

In the next round, Rhinock pulls the lever and the stone wall grinds open. Delemir is by the door and there is a small area to stand in by the door where Rhinock stands. Adaeril runs over to Rhinock avoiding the panels on the ground.

We move into position to avoid the trap. Rhinock can hear the two Brigands that fled calling from beyond. He hears them shouting words of alarm.

“Get the beast, get the beast!”

Everyone is in the same area with Rhinock as Erias is holding the door. Adaeril uses the Rod of Alertness to bestow a Prayer on our group. We get a +1 to attacks and saves and enemies take a -1 to attacks and saves. Beyond is a 20' hallway. The door to the right opens and we hear the noise of claws on stone through the left door. The left door is already cracked open.

Suddenly, four War Dogs come through! Through the right door come more Men wielding short swords and shields.

  • 11 men
  • 6 dogs.

With Jacob's magic ring of Animal Friendship, all of the Dogs fail to save and become docile. We all have a +1 to attacks, damage and saves.

A Cure Light Wounds spell is cast and Rhinock is healed for 6 damage by Delemir. Adaeril attacks and tries to do a sweep attack. He must hit AC 7/7. His sweep attacks kill 4 of the Brigands! Rhinock kills a bunch too, all 11 are cut down with sweep attacks!

Rhinock takes 4 hp of healing. After we cut down all the Ruffians in this area, we hear a low grumbling roar of a sizable beast coming from down the corridor. There are still 8 rounds left for Prayer.

Rhinock hides behind the door. Mirror Image goes off and Adaeril now has 4 Images.

3 more Fighters appear, 2 are flanking a large Tiger. It's fangs are as long as its head. It bolts around the corner toward the party with the Fighters right beside it. It charges in first.

The Fighters have a 6“ movement due to their plate mail and AC 2/2.

After a Cure Light Wounds, 8 more hitpoints are healed for Rhinock. Jacob and Adaeril are both in sight of the Saber-toothed Tiger, which counts as a medium sized creature. It must save against Jacob's ring and it is not affected by Prayer. The Tiger needs a 16 and DOES NOT SAVE! It becomes IMMEDIATELY DOCILE, a 7' long Tiger. The aggression of the creature is completely stripped away by the power of the ring.

Meanwhile, there are 3 more Fighters coming and they are charging. Two of them make their attacks against the Mirror Images, which have AC 1/3 and an effective AC 0. Neither Fighter hit! Then there is an attack on Delemir who is missed!

  • 14 Dogs charge
  • 10 Brigands emerge and charge.

Jacobs ring is now at Max Capacity so 6 of the Dogs are not effected!

There are 2 attacks against Rhinock but both miss and then 3 against Jacob. 1 hits for 4 damage and then another hit for 3 damage. The Brigands see the death pile and they fail their Morale Check, which happens NEXT ROUND.

Adaeril attacks and does 8, 12, 6, and 10 damage, bringing down 4 of the enemies.

We have killed ALL the Brigands!

Rhinock gets a second round of attacks and does 7 damage.

There is still fighting to be done against the Fighters…Adaeril engages with the Fighters. Erias charges into melee.

In the next round, a Hold Person spell is cast. A charge from the Ring of Animal Friendship is expended which causes all of the Dogs plus the Sabertooth Tiger to become friends of Jacob. There are now 7 Dogs guarding Jacob.

Erias is down to 0 hp and HE GOES DOWN! Rhinock cuts down his former foe. 2 of the Fighters and 4 War Dogs attack.

Hold Person goes off and the two Fighters FAIL their saves and are HELD! Adaeril gets 3 Mirror Images and one of the Fighters attacks Delemir. He hits and does 3 damage. The other Fighters are attacking Mirror Images but all are missed!

Suddenly, a man in a robe shows up. He is a glimmering man with his own Guard Dogs and they are charging!

Both of the Dogs miss the Mirror Images on Adaeril and he attacks the Dogs. The Glimmering Robed Man casts Magic Missile and now there are two Magic Missiles against Delemir, but his BROOCH absorbs the spells. Delemir does 12 damage on the Fighter wearing Leather Armor then he makes a second attack and the Fighter dies.

There are now 6 attacks on the Mirror Images which have AC 1 but only 1 hit. A Mirror Image is destroyed!

Rhinock is missed and Adaeril is missed in the melee.

As the Hold Person spell goes off, the Magic-User is HELD. Adaeril strikes a Dog for 13 damage but only 2 of the Dogs are dead. Jacob's Charmed Dogs hit 3 times and kills one of the enemy dogs! The Sabertooth Tiger attacks as a 5 HD Monster.

In the next round, Rhinock and Adaeril kill one Dog each and then Jacob kills one. His Charmed Dogs kill another one and the Tiger does 5 damage, kills the last dog!

COMBAT ENDS


Adaeril checks through the Magic-User's belongings. Erias is healed for 6 hit points and then Rhinock is also healed for 7.

There is a faint trace of magic coming from the Fighter, which has an Abjuration aura.

The Brigands had coins as well.

We open the doors, Adaeril has a 1-3 on doors.

In this area are a bunch of bones and dead rabbits lying next to the left door. The corridor curves to the left. We open the left door and find a refuse area with makeshift water bowls.

There is a door to the right and a bunch of trash and camp supplies in this room. We find a deck of cards and some bone dice but no coins. The cards do not appear magical nor are the dice. We go through the west door back to the corridor.


Up ahead is a dimly lit corridor. The torches stop back toward the end. We go to the upper right corridor and find a door where the Magic-User came from.

The room is bisected by a crude curtain that is loosely suspended from the ceiling. There is a door to the left.

We search behind the canvas and find an alcove area to the left with a creaky looking workbench. It appears be used for the manufacture of precise equipment. There is also a large stone table in the slanted alcove and a stack of 8 sorry-looking books. There is one book that is not on the stack and it is open.

The open book appears to detail a variety of alchemical fluids.

Adaeril searches through the books. Delemir finds that the tools are worth something. There are 5 books that are totally destroyed and have taken severe water damage. They are missing all the corners and the pages are mush. Three books are not mush.

The book is entitled:

  • Basic Biofluids by Vanato the Quick. It discusses their suspension and preservations channels.
  • Notes by Vermillion on the manufacture of Summoning Staves.
  • The Journal of Ekilo II. This makes references to other journals and a hunt-like investigation into the Green Lance. There were legendary hidden vaults, constructed with the help of “The Cursed” wizard. It has a proximity to the volcano.

Adaeril takes the books.

The air is noticeably colder than the rest of the complex in this area. We find an ironbound chest and two Wolves and a Goat hung by a spike. They are butchered and covered in dried blood.

Adaeril looks for a groove or needle holes on the chest. He does notice a hole in the north wall about 3' up, something was driven into the wall.
