The party has opted for some overland exploration. We plan to see what lies to the north west of Mombafra.

Jacob hires 4 of the Heavy Horsemen and Galador hires the other 4. All 8 of the Heavy Horsemen are hired and under Jacob's command.

We depart on horseback and travel to the north west.


It will take us a full day to get to the first location. Our travel is uneventful so far but we are in the Mombafra patrolled territory for 3 hexes.

From here, we can see that the hills drop down into a waste. Beyond this hex there are hills, plains and more wastes. Maervahr is flying above on his Hippogriff and can see a ruin of a large settlement in the plains to the north west. It looks like it was a large town or small city at one point and there is mostly just a bunch of rubble.

A Hippogriff flies 12 miles per hour so Maervahr is able to fly out and return.

We make camp for the night and Jacob is on the midnight watch.


That evening, Maervahr flies out ahead to scout out the ruins. When he arrives at the ruin, he can see that it is a spread out settlement but there are wuite a lot of ruined buildings. Evidently, there were lots of farming and pastures out this way at one point. Most of the buildings have been reduced to rubble but they are scattered amongst the plains.

Maervahr does notice that there are two sizable structures that have not completely collapsed. One was a temple and the other is pentagonal, like a barracks, but is partially collapsed. They were not all composed of rock, which is an indication why they broke down over the centuries. Maervahr also notices several small dogs or wolves in the area and they appear to be blinking. These are wild Blink Dogs.


Maervahr returns to the group and we approach the ruined city in the morning. We see the buildings, including a pentagonal building. 3 stories tall. Completely standing. I see nothing react to our approach. We move up to the building. A blink dog appears in front of the building.

I land on top of the building, I can see through the ruined roof. Building below has an incredibly tall ceiling, maybe a coleseum, ruined seats and stairs. An arena. There are 8 blink dogs inside. Plenty of places to hide. Staircases and passages that go around the perimeter I can see off in the outside, our allies have gotten about 150 yards from the entrance before they arrive.

We attempt to open the doors and I fly up to the roof.

Rhinock stays back with the horsemen. Galador opens the door. 20-30' away are some blink dogs looking at him with curious eyes. He offers them food and they approach him. They seem to be peaceful toward Galador. Galador does not see any treasure. Eventually he comes to a perimeter where he finds a protected box, bunker for viewing the colleseum. Dogs begin blinking in front of Galador, they start barking. They look confused. They blink toward the opposite door. Getting his attention away from the bunker.

Inside the bunker is a single blink dog with a nest. It looks like it is pregnant. We can see in the back of the bunker. Behind a counter, amongst ruins of furniture. Dust and gravel covered chest. I investigate the chest.

The blink dogs are trying to lead Galador toward the north. I dont see any obvious traps, but it has a steel lock with a keyhole. Big Lock.

They are leading Galador toward the rest of the city. Maervahr flies off toward the north to see where they are leading us. Single Blink Dog leads us to the outside of the other building. Not nearly as big as the collesum.

We found an old Temple of Geos. Inside the place is dark, roof has collapsed in on itself. Blink Dog leads us to 100 yards away.

Jacob thinks there are Displacer Beasts inside. Outside the temple (cathedral to GEOS). The door is on the ground, 20' away. Pews lining the hallway. Roof collapsed in mostly. Long hall of worship. Dimly see an altar at the far side.

It is not desecrated, just abandoned apparently. Everyone enters

ROLL SURPRISE A large spider is 3' across disappears behind the corner, web is shaking slightly. I cast Burning Hands on one of the webs to the right. Jacob and Jocelyn are leaving. Galador leaves.

Both sides comes large spiders. They charge into the front line. 5 large spiders. They have AC 8 or 9 due to charge. Small / medium sized. Galador does 5 damage.

Galador must save versus poison. HE SAVES! Takes 1 damage. Rhinock must save and does so. Maervahr CANCELS BURNING HANDS!

Rhinock gets a second attack. Maervahr goes psionically invisible. He kills one! 4 are now in melee.

I throw a dagger and then go invisible They are attacking Rhinock, 2 hit!

Rhinock hits for 4 damage, 4 spiders still alive! Galador hits for 9 damage, kills one!

Rhinock hits for 8 damage, kills another one. Jacob does 10 damage. Sabretooth bite and claw hit for 11 damage, kills the last spider. I dont see any more spiders in the northern area of the temple. Oblong rectangular door, lowered area behind altar. Altar on an elevated area. Curved seating areas. Hidden behind is this oblong trap door.

Maervahr searches around the altar, along with Galador and Jacob. We dont find anything of note. We can see things wrapped up. Galador hacks down the blink dogs. Galador down 1 hp Rhinock down 3 hp.

Trap door pulls upward. Jacob tries to open it. takes 2 tries.

Reveals a thin staircase that goes down to an area that is too dark. Maervahr pulls out the lantern. We find an underground pantry. Rotted wooden steps. No movement. He skips down the stairs, testing them as he goes down. Old supplies on old shelves. A couple of crates, wooden boxes. sacks and things. Eaten by rats. Nightstand table there is a small donation box. There are some coins inside. box was painted white at some point, latch was made by a child. Rhinock opens it.

One crate contains small boxes, 30 flasks of oil down here. Jacob investigates the altar. Altar seems solid. Searching the room, we find 2 things. Maervahr notices that there are small body parts, fingers and toes and flesh that look decripit, not decayed, OLD. Looks unnatural, hacked away with weapons. Portion of lower arm that ends with a clawed hand. Some of the meat looks moist. Bone was broken with heavy bludgeoning weapon. Some of the mortar on the far wall is not quite connected. Some kind of hole? Jacob finds on the base of the altar, a panel has been opened at the base. Inside are a couple of racks, small box on a shelf that is open. Contains 1/3 full of light bolts (silver). 2 racks can hold weapons like a short sword. They are empty.

Galador notices that the damage was all dealt by bludgenoning weapons. Rhinock uses a crowbar to open the SECRET DOOR!

They finally open the door!

ROLL SURPRISE We are not surprised!

Snap all of the old mortar off the edge of the stone. Mortar breaks, looks old but the door cracks open. Smell of death pours out!

Cobblestone floor goes down 10' hallway into the blackness. There is a grotesque sound of creature alarm.

I cast LIGHTNING BOLT with surprise segment.

Out of the blackness we hear sudden movements, charging out of the darkness. They move 3“ when charging. 4 ghouls move out of the darkness. My lightning bolt misses all of them.

AC 5 for Ghouls.

Rhinock hits for 7 damage. Jacob hits for 15 damage, but does not kill!

We are overcome by nauseous smell. Jocelyn, Maervahr and Jacob take -2 to hit rolls.

2 attacking Rhinock, 1 on Jocelyn, 1 on Tiger. Tiger does 7 damage.

2 claws do 4 damage to Rhinock, saves! 1 bite does 3 damage, SAVES!

Jocelyn takes 2 damage, NO DAMAGE due to STONESKIN!

Lightning bolt illuminates a stone sarcophagus, sprays across the top. No eyeballs.

I cast ROPE TRICK

Simultaneous Initiative.

AC 4 against ghasts. Jacob hits for 12 damage, Galidor misses. Sabretooth hits with 2 claws, 7 damage. None of the Ghasts are slain.

Protection from Evil does NOT keep Ghasts at bay. 5 damage to Jacob and is PARALYZED! Does 8 more damage to Jacob. 1 on Galador and 1 on tiger. 4 damage to Galador , failed! Takes 8 damage. Paralyzed!

Jocelyn is the final target. Takes 5 damage. JOCELYN IS PARALYZED!

I climb up into my ROPE TRICK!

Rhinock hits for 11 damage. Destroys one! 3 attack Rhinock. 2 claws hit Tiger, Another save passes! Sabretooth is still up. Rhinock is attacked for 4 damage and FAILS itself, takes 8 damage.

Sabretooth hits for 3 and 7 damage, KILLS ONE!

I cast Phantasmal Force on the Ghasts to cover them in Burning Tar! One of the Ghasts Saves! one is bogged down by the illusion. One completely ignores it.

Sabretooth does 3 damage and 6 damage to one, Tiger slays the illusion racked one. Tiger takes 2 damage from claws and 8 damage.

Remaining Ghast tries to lug Rhinock toward the way we can enter. My webbing encases the Ghast.

I start pulling Jacob and the rest

Galador, Rhinock are unparalyzed.

Rhinock could cut himself out in a turn. THE GHAST SUFFOCATES!

I retrieve my rope from ROPE TRICK

Jocelyn heals herself, I burn the web and it illuminates a tomb. Rhinock has 45 hp. Galador has 20 hp. Tiger is at 10 hp.

I cast STONESKIN on Joceyln.

We return to the colleseum with a ghast head and spider parts, we presnt them to the Blink Dogs. The one that lead us to the temple. And leads us to the bunker area.

Blink dog leads us to the chest. Latch and wood has been gnawed by some creature.

63 days gestation for a blink dog.
