Survival Stories From The Hinterlands

INTO OLD MOMBAFRA: PART 3

Session 96, October 15th, 2023 - INTO OLD MOMBAFRA: Part 3

LOG DATE 04/29/25

THE ROSTER
  • Urist Pebblemouth - Dwarf FTR1/THF1 AC 8/8 MV 12“ Doors 1-2 15,14,14,13,16,9 hp 10, AL CN
  • Autumn Leafwalker - DRD1
  • Fothas - Dwarf FTR1
  • Clancey - FTR1, OWES 100 gp UPKEEP

NEWS and RUMORS

  • Clancey has not been able to pay his upkeep.
  • The story of the discovery of the well: Some Ruffians were sent by the Forgotten Master to attack us when we noticed some members of the Skyway, an organization of Thief-Acrobats. This was also noticed by The Luminous Coin, a local Thieves' Guild. It was around this time that a well was melted open, providing an entry into Old Mombafra. Thieves and Urchins soon discovered the entry and have gone down into the well to explore it. They found a dungeon.
  • Fothas has been tasked with finding the new entrance that leads into one of the old Dwarven settlements. He must also find some ancient Dwarven tubes from within the ruins, at least one or two tubes. Jek heard that the Thieves' Guild tried to steal the Icon of Sleal from the Temple of Flame in Mombafra. None of the thieves that tried to steal it have returned. This is significant because Paren, who is an Acolyte of Sleal, was one of the first to hear of the missing icon after they performed a rare ritual. The Temple has a rivalry with the Thieves and Assassins guild. Some think the icon was stolen by the Luminous Coin and others think that the icon has gained life and now walks the streets. They also think it has something to do with the opening of the well.
  • Some Giant Toads have been sighted in the Nobles Quarters.

Seed Moon the 27th, 496

We are headed back to the well.

The party passes by a Street Walker and some Street Urchins. We arrive at the site and head down.

Clancey lands on the board, which is still laid across the bottom of the well. The coast seems to be clear. Clancey lights up his bullseye lantern and we are Illuminated along with an 8” ray of light.

There is a slime layer on the floor that runs through the west door. The slime can cause one to slip. We find another room that is similarly coated. This is the area that once had a quartz shrine. There is also a stone door and we notice that the slime dissipates halfway down the corridor.

We enter a burned out room, which is mainly along the south and east portion of the room. All that remains is the burnt out husk of the corpse of a Gnome. There is some adventuring gear in the alcove. There is also an unopened wooden door to the west. The adventuring gear includes

  • a shortsword
  • some iron rations
  • a bedroll
  • a wineskin

Clancey takes the iron rations. There is something else we notice now: the last time we were here, the ceiling had cocoons on it from Giant Centipedes. We burned them all along with the things that were in here the last time we were here. Since then a lot of the cocoon string has fallen down and we notice that there is a crease in the south east corner. This was a portion of the ceiling where a melted cocoon fell off.

We examine the ceiling and it looks like it was maybe a panel or trap that might fallen away on that section of the ceiling. Clancey uses his bullseye lantern to make out the rest of the creases and believes the portion of the wall was a square panel if the panel were removed. The crease makes a complete square.

Fothas thinks the ceiling looks stable. Urist also thinks the area is safe and that the portion of the ceiling probably lifts upward. Clancey gives Urist a boost to climb up and he scales up the dungeon wall toward the square in the ceiling. He easily pushes it to the side and there is a SHOUT OF ALARM!

Urist sees a fully illuminated room with 10 Men. There is a strong smell of food coming from the enclosed environment. The 10 Men are all wearing leather armor.

Clancey pulls out his bow as Urist closes the door. We hear muffled shouting as he quickly climbs down. We see the door open and a rope is lowered.

COMBAT BEGINS

Clancey does 4 damage with his short bow and kills one of the men as he climbs down the rope.

Urist fires for 2 damage and Clancey hits a second man, killing another one. At this point, 6 more of the Men come down and engage us in melee. Autumn cannot open the door this round.

Urist fires his crossbow and Clancey shoots his shortbow. Fothas gets sweep attacks. Clancey hits one for 3 damage and kills another one! Urist also kills one!

There are now 6 down here and more are coming. Fothas is attacked and takes 3 damage and in retaliation, he kills 2 in one set of sweep attacks.

Clancey charges into melee and does 9 damage, which kills one however the Ruffian gets a retaliatory strike. Clancey dodges! Meanwhile, Autumn spears one Man to death and there are only 2 left alive. Fothas kills another one, leaving only 1 left alive.

Clancey tries to grab the rope but it has been pulled up. There is now only one guy down here and he fails his morale check.

As the sole survivor of his group, the Ruffian throws down his weapons and begs for his life.

COMBAT ENDS

We begin questioning the prisoner and he says, “I'm just a regular gods-fearing Mombafran citizen, trying to make it in the world.”

He tells us that he cannot let Beffin see him or the guild will kill him. Urist does not know Beffin, who is the leader of the Luminous Coin.

Meanwhile, Clancey starts looking through the coin purses of the fallen.

  • 84 gp

Fothas gives him 5 gp to come with us and we hire him as a Porter, probably saving his life.

We continue on and Urist thinks he hears an insectoid chattering coming from somewhere.

We head back toward the east to explore that side of the dungeon. Because Fothas is wearing plate mail, we have a 6“ move. The party reaches the area where the left wall has the carvings of goat faces that are twisted in agony.

Fothas finds one of the tripwires we disarmed previously has been replaced. He disarms it again and it snaps loudly. Another set of bear traps fly up and snap shut loudly. we find that the stone in this room has been hewn and shifts in the passage shifts to the south room.

Boxes and barrels have been replaced in the front of the southern door. They contained rotted food and stale water.

The Rogue Porter says that there is a wall of dirt that blocks the way up ahead. Urist grabs the bear traps and takes them with us.

We head up the stairs and see more stairs and they are all collapsed. At this point, the party must take a turn of rest and then we head east and make it to the Kobold room.

It is completely abandoned.

All of the bedrolls have been pushed aside but they are at least still here, maybe a fewer of them than before.

We head north to the Kobold rooms.

ROLL SURPRISE

Clancey can see far to the south and notices that it opens into another series of dirt tunnels. No stone in here. We see nothing to the south but it was previously occupied and is no longer. There is some old Kobold bedding made from shitty furs and things.

When we first step on a stone in the room, there is a shout of alarm “Something is coming!”

  • Fothas moves forward into the tunnel.
  • Clancey follows with his short bow ready.

There is gravel and dirt built up to a ramp to an elevated area. At the top is a crude wooden throne that is small sized. There are also 5 Kobolds that have javelins and axes.

They throw Javelins at us and 3 javelins are specifically aimed at Clancey. All miss! Our Rogue Porter is shot and he is killed, knocked down to a -3 with a javelin!

  • Clancey shoots the Kobolds with a short bow.
  • Fothas bandages the Porter.

2 shots are fired at Autumn and BOTH HIT! They do 5 damage to Autumn and she is at -1 hit points. AUTUMN is DOWN!

Fothas is the target of 3 javelins but they all miss. Urist is hit though and takes 4 points of damage. HE IS STILL ALIVE!

Clancey misses a Kobold and Fothas manages to stablize our Rogue Porter. The Kobolds charge with their axes. Again, Clancey shoots one for 5 damage and kills it!

There are 3 attacks on Urist and 1 on Fothas. Urist is hit twice for 1 damage and 6 damage. URIST DROPS! He is at -3 hit points.

Clancey pulls out my two-handed sword and attacks. There are 3 attacks on Clancey as the Kobolds tell us to surrender now! All 3 miss.

Clancey hits for 2 damage and 3 damage. Next round, Clancey goes to bind the wounds of Urist.

The Kobold watches as his allies are cut down immediately!

COMBAT ENDS

Autumn and Urist are stabilized but in a coma.

  • 72 cp

Autumn is a Half-Elf so if she dies, she can be raised.

It us 3 turns to get all three downed people out of the well. We make it all the way to the plank as our Kobold captive makes a run for it.

TREASURE SPLIT

84 / 4 = 21 gp each

  • 18 cp each.

Autumn and Urist will be ready on the 7th.

The party reforms with a different lineup for Part 2.

NEW LINEUP

  • Arig - FTR1
  • Jek - THF6
  • Fothas
  • Tolk - FTR1 hp2

MERCENARIES

  • Medium Horsemen
  • Light Footmen x3 - 6 gp / day.

We return to the well and climb down.

Fothas, Jek and Tolk are on doors. We progress through the dungeon and arrive back where the group was previously. Jek pokes around looking for anything left but finds nothing.

Jek listens for a sec and he hears the chittering of rodents. There is an earthy smell in the air like mildew.

We see a plank across a ditch going over toward an elevated area which is about head height. It is hard to see whats up above.

We go left and find that the ditch shrinks to a 5' wide corridor and goes up in elevation. It cuts through a worked corridor.

ROLL SURPRISE

We hear something soft land on the ground and then something soft start rolling. This is followed by the scratching of hard feet on stone and they start moving up to the right. We also notice a dull red glow.

  • Arig readies his sword.
  • Jek hides in shadows.
  • Tolk and Fathos set to receive charge.

The red glow fades quickly and the source starts skittering away.

NO COMBAT

We go toward a door at about 3' distance and we cannot see very far into a ditch. There is a scrawling of some words on the corridor wall that is written in common. The words say “WRONG WAY”.

We also find some alcoves but there is nothing in them. The stone of the walls is made of decorative cobblestone and it looks like there was once held a sconce. When we were here previously, we were stepping on several broken spearheads and noticed that there were some leaves down there and spearheads were also jammed into the ground. These were not human spears, but maybe from Kobolds. Someone made a trap and the spears are covered in dried blood.

Jek kicks some dirt on the ground so is no longer moving silently.

We look at the words that say “WRONG WAY” and assume it was a warning to other adventurers perhaps.

We open the east door and see some crystalline rock on the stone. Jek listens at the far door but does not hear anything.

We find another room made of stone and is partially embedded in foliage, dirt and rubble. The rubble covers the floor up to about 4-12 inches and it is packed down. Bones of small animals are seen sticking out.

Jek searches for traps but does not see any traps. There are some decaying trees from above and an earthy smell of death and decay. Fothas looks for shifting walls while Arig holds the door. Jek starts to search the walls with his dagger hilt to tap along for hollow sounds and also tries to help Fothas.

We rest for a turn.

Finding nothing else, we head west beyond the door and down the passage.

ROLL SURPRISE

We hear a door close softly down to the south east as we open the right hand door. Coming from the east side, we see that a light falls upon a worked corridor. We also find a worked section of the corridor that ends as it falls into a pit. It is here that our light falls upon 2 Giant Mushrooms that are taller than men!

The Giant Mushrooms open their orifices and unleash a SHRIEK!

Jek runs out of the room.

We shut the door and still hear the shrieking.

COMBAT ENDS

We head through the west door and are now standing amongst a nicely furnished room. Everything is made to be sized for a Dwarf or smaller. We find a tiny chest of cabinets and a candle made of a smaller portion of a real candle.

Sitting on a bed in this chamber is some sort of Rat type thing. It is 3' tall and sitting like a human but its hands are pressed against its ears. Its furry body is covered in boils and blemishes. It appears to be diseased and its face is wet from crying.

Tolk is trying to hold the door but it is forced open by a cloud of Giant Rats!

COMBAT BEGINS

We are now in melee with 11 Giant Rats and Tolk is being attacked by 8 of them. We have an AC 3 for Tolk who takes 1 hit for 3 damage. TOLK IS AT -1 HP AND GOES DOWN! The Giant Rats continue eating Tolk!

Jek kills one with a sling bullet as Arig and Fothas are getting shot at too. There are 16 shots being fired from 8 Shooters.

Arig can only be hit on a 20 versus these sling bullets. Luckily, 4 of the bullets hit some of the Rats and 4 of them are killed. Tolk might instantly die from the swarming Rats…but HE STILL LIVES YET!

The Giants Rats must now make a morale check. They fail and start to leave

The fight continues from down the hall due to the 8 shooters. None of them hit Arig and they also miss everyone else. Finally, we hear the Shriekers stop their shrieking. Jek tosses a burning oil flask down the hall and it hits! He kills 2 of them with the fire.

As they continue burning, the splash does 3, 3, 1, and 3 damage. Jek goes to our fallen companion and stops Tolk's bleeding

Fothas can see clearly that there are still 4 enemies. He can attack and must hit AC 7/7. He hits and does 3 and 6 damage. The 3 damage does not kill but 6 does kill one of the Rogues.

Jek is able to stabilize Tolk!

The remaining Rogues run off and we hear a door open. They yell out, “Get Befin out here!” toward an unseen group.

Arig lifts up Tolk and then we return to the diseased Rat person. Jek asks if it can speak the Common tongue. There is a huge pool of tears drenching the makeshift bedding as the creature looks timid and uncertain. It pulls up the bedding on its head but does not reply.

ROLL SURPRISE

WE ARE SURPRISED!

As we make our way out of this area, one of us is backstabbed…it's Fothas! A longsword gets driven into his back from behind and he has AC 3/3 versus a longsword. Suddenly, a Thief appears as he comes out of magical invisibility.

Fothas is HIT and he takes 12 damage from the backstab! There are now 2 more attacks as he is HIT AGAIN but this time only takes 2 damage. Jek attacks at a -4 due to the Thief going invisible again but he must still hit AC 5/8. Jek hits for 4 damage!

At this moment, we also see the door open in the east. We begin to flee and manage to get away but TOLK did not make it out as we had to leave his body behind.

COMBAT ENDS

We get away and return to the surface.

TREASURE SPLIT

This second half we did not get any treasure.

  • 52 xp each for the first half only.
  • 44 xp each for the second half only.

TOLK IS DECEASED.

We are ending the session on…
