Jacob hires 7 Shortbow Archers for 2 gp / day. They are paid for 3 days up front.
Adaeril looks to hire mercenaries also.
Adaeril hires the Longbow Archers for 80 gp for 5 days.
There is also a teamster, hired!
3 mules cost 60 gp and can carry 2000 gp or 6000 gp max. They have hp 13, 17, 20.
We head north west of Mombafra.
As the party travels, we find an area where the hills slope down into a small grassy valley up ahead. There are several creeks in the area that are surrounded on all sides by hills. These are 6 mile hexes.
We search the hills and grasslands but find nothing on our first day. We begin setting up camp.
The watch has two random Mercenaries during each watch, Adaeril and Delemir take darkness watches due to their infravision. Jacob uses his sword during his watch to get a perimeter light. This area is patrolled by Mombafra so encounters should be uncommon.
The night passes without incident.
3 hexes outside of Mombafra is heavily patrolled. It takes us 3 hours to pass through the hex on the borderlands of Mombafra's territory. We pass into the north hex.
The landscape descends into a grassy region and then we begin checking to the west. We see grasslands to the south west and south east. There is grass in all surrounding hexes and this area is like the Sea of Grass. However, these grasslands are a type of plains hex.
At 18“ of distance, there is an encounter. We arrive from the west.
These are in 10's of yards for outside range. As we descended from the mountains, we come into a portion of the Sea of Grass. We break free from the hills and notice some smoke rising from our left to the south.
Tucked away in a depression is a collection of extraordinarily crude huts. Moving about the huts, we can see several large creatures, about 7' tall. It is a group of Bugbears. We count 15 of them and they have noticed us!
All of the Bugbears strike up a battle rage as Autumn hops off her horse.
There are a total of 21 Bugbears with 10' long glaive-guisarme polearms. There is one large, armored Bugbear Leader.
Bless goes off and everyone is blessed for 6 rounds.
Jacob hits with his longbow for 6 damage. Adaeril casts Mirror Image.
ANYONE CAN FIGHT WHILE MOUNTED!
The Bugbears charge as the Mirror Image spell goes off. Adaeril has 4 images and it lasts 8 rounds.
Entangle was cast by Autumn on the Bugbears. They need to save. All of them fail their save except for 4 Bugbears who are considered slowed moving through the area of the spell. 4 of the Bugbears are engtangled completely.
The have AC 6.
Our Shortbow Archers do 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 5, 2 damage. They do 5 damage to the group that was charging. 13 of the Bugbears, including their Leader make it to the party to engage in melee. There are 11 characters they move into melee with…basically all of us.
They attack and destroy one mirror image. The Shorbow Archers each have 1d8+3 hitpoints.
They missed the Longbow Archers who have 7 hp and 7 hp respectively.
There are 2 attacks on Autumn who has AC 7. She takes one hit for 5 damage. AUTUMN DROPS!
Jacob can retaliate at the charging Bugbears. They each have AC 6.
One of the Mules did 1 damage and rips out an embedded arrow from the Bugbear. The Entangle spell lasts for 10 rounds.
Adaeril casts Magic Missile on the Leader which does 10 damage. The katana held by Jacob has a speed factor of 4. Meanwhile, the fallen Druid is healed for 5 hp.
Belguil and Jacob get 2 attacks each and one of the Mules bites for 2 damage. Belguil did 11 damage and Jacob does 17 damage, Jacob kills one. His Warhorse does 1 damage and then 3 damage, 7 damage total.
Mirror Image had been cast and 2 are struck, 2 mirror images are destroyed. Jacob is being attacked.
Bugbears are considered LARGE creatures.
Adaeril attacks the leader while Delemir casts Cure Light Wounds on the Ranger, Cliff.
There is a Morale Check for our Archers but our hired Mercenaries, the Shortbowmen, are holding fast!
Some of us attempt to disengage from melee. The 4 Shortbow Archers are followed and killed, all of them are dead.
We must hit an AC 4 against the Leader. Adaeril hits the leader for 8 damage while the Mule misses.
We manage to kill a Bugbear and the Bugbear Leader this time! The slowed ones (of which there are just 4) can be hit at +4. 14 Bugbears continue their attacks.
Adaeril targets the slow ones and gains a +4 to hit.
The Bugbears must check Morale.
Adaeril hits with a longbow for 4 and 4 damage with two arrows. The party can become disengaged at 1“. Another attack against a Bugbear by Adaeril hits for 6 and 3 damage. We kill another 3 Bugbears.
Slowed AC 9, Adaeril hits for 4 damage and the Longbow Archer kills one. He does 4 damage to another. Delemir is hit for 4 and 5 damage by one of the slowed ones but then he kills another one, Belguil also kills one of the Bugbears.
The rest of them are still at 18” distance and some are still slowed at 8.5“ away.
Adaeril continues to attack and hits for 6 damage while a slowed one takes 3 and 2 damage. Jacob pursues the ones who failed their morale and shoots them all down with his bow.
WE WON THE BATTLE and there are now 21 Bugbears that are dead.
We find the following treasure from the fallen:
Jacob finds all of our mounts, including the Mules that fled. Once we have our mounts, we pack up the treasure and head back.
We get back to Mombafra safely.
Everone is healed but Autumn is on bedrest until the 1st of Blade Moon.
ARIG joins us to replace Autumn and GALADOR joins us to replace Cliff, the Ranger.
Two of the Longbow Archers are healed. Adaeril will rehire the two surviving Archers and plan to head to the north east of Mombafra to explore more hexes.
The party heads out.
We find ourselves in a shrub land which is tough to travel through. After the first day we search for lairs and find nothing interesting in the Hills.
We are surprised.
We find a small crevasse and a small caverns that appears to be naturally weathered.
We approach on our mounts. As we get closer, we notice little shapes, like several little creatures approaching rapidly.
There are 40 Giant Rats charging at our party. They create a wave like effect and start pouring out of the crevasse in alarm from a distance of 9”.
Adaeril casts Mirror Image.
2 of the Giant Rats are killed by our Longbow Archers and Adaeril now has 3 illusionary images of himself.
3 of the Giant Rats are killed next, a total of 5 dead. Once they get into melee range, there are 35 attacks incoming.
There are 11 attacks against Galador's Horse, which is a Light Warhorse. The Horses all have AC 7, which applies to everyone.
The Warhorse takes 7 damage and is SLAIN! Killed by Giant Rats…
Arig's horse dies also and then some move to attack Arig. He takes 1 damage.
Belguil's horse takes 5 damage and is also slain! We still face off against 35 Giant Rats, swarming around us.
Adaeril charges into battle without his Horse. He gets sweep attacks and there are now 5 dead Giant Rats, slain by Adaeril. 17 still remain. 11 of the Rats are on the mirror images, which are attacked as if they were real. ALL of the Giant Rats miss! Galador is also missed.
Arig loses 1 hp and is now at -2 hp. Adaeril continues with another sweep attack. He hits for 3, 9, 3, 5, and 5 damage, killing 5 more.
3 Giants Rats remain in melee and they are all slain as they flee!
There is still a hovel that remains here,
Meanwhile, following the battle, Arig is healed back to 1 hp.
We find some treasure inside the small cave:
Leaving behind the worthless copper coins, we head back to camp but at the end of the day, we are only 2 miles from the rat nest.
The party gets back to Mombafra unscathed!
