We plan to return back to the Delbo Prison…
For Upkeep, Smedley “Jek” Brinlock owes 300 gp, which is paid in full.
During our previous foray into the dungeons of Delbo, we had found a secret door that was opened with the word “Elfhand”. Beyond the door was the horrendous stench of some terrible beast, like a horrible ooze and an animated bladed chain. We find nothing exceptional in the area and then we took another route to avoid the bridge.
Rhinock got killed from an Imps tail that was captured by Sepia Snake Sigil spell.
We are back in Delbo and it is cold for the season. The sky is clear and it has not rained in over a week. The group ran into some Jackals in the ruins last time.
We travel across the city ruins toward the keep and arrive just outside the keep. There are no telling marks from anything residing here recently.
We push through the double doors and find a trap door leading to a ladder with metal rungs that descends down to the prison below. We go down the ladder and find some stairs and a wooden sign to the right that is instructing us to “sign in”.
Iona volunteers to cross first.
We cross over the bridge deftly. When Iskandar crosses, he sees a group of Skeletons. The Skeletons are bone white and they are crouched in wait.
Iskandar casts Web while Iona crosses back over the bridge. Web goes off and manifests out of nowhere and traps 9 of the 10 skeletons. The one Skeleton continues moving forward and joins Iskandar in melee. There are bones and rusted falchions sticking out of the Web.
Iskandar tries to attack with a knife. Rhinock tries to cross the water with a rope while Jek and Iona attack. Jek hits the one free Skeleton but does not destroy it.
Iskander hits one of the webbed Skeletons for 1 damage.
The free Skeleton misses Rhinock (AC -1) but Rhinock and Iskandar smite the Skeleton, crushing it to a pile of bones! The rest of the Webbed Skeletons are destroyed and then one turn passes.
Iskandars Web lasts for a total of 12 turns.
We head toward the secret tunnel and find a parallel path that leads to a hallway. Here we find scorch marks on the wall and the doors are seared with flame. This is where the party found an Ooze slime thing that they hit with mostly fire and bits and bobs, causing it to be destroyed.
There is a secret door leading to a chamber in the south. In this location we found a table with a bladed chain and a link that was shattered. Also on the table is a rack used for holding vials. It is presently empty. There is a switch on the diagonal wall. We press the switch…and the wall grinds away, revealing a tunnel that slants downward, deeper into the earth.
The tunnel slants downwards for a ways before leveling out to the surface made of soft, packed dirt. The tunnel is rounded as if carved out of the earth by a Great Worm. It is not a well manufactured tunnel but we continue along for 20 minutes until we come to a bend indicated on the tunnel. The word is Elfhand carved in the dirt that makes up the left wall. The words fade into a trickle of dirt and dust that falls from the ceiling, There is a 10' wide tunnel to the left that leads into the darkness. Here we find some decayed food and rotten wood along with some wet rags and sweat.
Rhinock takes the lead and we go into the tunnel. In the torchlight, we can see that the earthy ground has twigs and bits of dried and dead foliage. After a few feet, the ground becomes covered in a bed of light twigs and dirt. We find some pine needles and the soft remnants of decayed leaves. The stench gets stronger.
The bedding gets thicker and then sinks in multiple inches. Suddenly, from up ahead, there is the sound of stone grinding on stone that comes from above. In the darkness up ahead, the foliage is disturbed and there is a rush of foul stench.
Iskandar uses his wand to SHINE in the direction of the sounds. We see something big outside of our torchlight and it is 60' away. An orb of light manifests about 20' high in the great cavern. It forms above the form of a Hill Giant which is throwing a boulder.
Iona misses the Hill Giant while Jek throws a flask at it. The flask lands 4' away and to the left of the Giant. It lands on the soft foliage. The flask does not break but the foliage begins cracking and smoking.
The Hill Giant looses its boulder and it flies toward Rhinock and MISSES! The boulder crashes into the ground next to him and the Giant goes to pick up another…
Jek uses his sling to fire a bullet at his face while Rhinock charges, Iona shoots her crossbow while Iskandar casts Magic Missile.
As Rhinock charges across the soft earth the boulder misses again! Rhinock can make an attack against AC 4 for the Hill Giant. Meanwhile, the missiles hit the Giant but it still stands. Rhinock is now toe to toe with the Hill Giant.
Iskandar does 10 damage with his Magic Missile and Jek does 3 damage, Iona does 5 damage after a charge with her spear.
The Giant is still up but there is a Morale check on the Giant as it turns to flee. Rhinock attacks and does 6 damage, sending it tumbling down where it falls with a large crash. The Hill Giant moves no more.
There is a large cavernous dome is the creatures lair containing 5 chests and several stone urns positioned at odd angles. Inside the urns we see several shining coins. We search the area for traps and find that the urns are made of featureless gray stone. The chests are all similarly buried in debris but Jek notices some hidden sharp blades beneath the foliage. Iona notices a trap as well, this one seems to be arranged around the chests.
Clearing away the foliage there is no mechanism but many layers of broken blades of metal. One person can climb over the area. Iskandar goes over to one of the chests and the latches come up. The big lid comes open easily.
Inside the chest are many coins of copper, silver, gold and platinum. 1000's of each. This chest weighs over 1000 pounds. Rhinock looks for where the Giant was sleeping and finds a big extra tall pile of dirt and furs, mostly wolf furs and bear furs.
Iskandar and Iona opens two more chests and find more coins, well over 60,000 coins in total. Inside the piles of fur. Rhinock finds a crude sack filled with more coinage. Rhinock opens it and finds that it weighs over 1000 pounds. There are multiple human sized bags filled with platinum pieces, and there are OVER 1000 coins!
Iskandar ties off a rope as we find another 10' wide tunnel. We start exploring down the tunnel.
The party travels for about 60' until we come to a turn that leads toward another chamber. Sunlight streams into this chamber and we see the bodies of 3 Giants Lizards with rope dangling loosely from a huge boulder. The Giant Lizards crane up their necks to look at us and then bare their teeth. The ropes look long and the Lizards are 5“ away.
The Lizards are very big and their tails extend past our vision with their bodies about 10-15' long but otherwise look like normal lizards. The 3 Giant Lizards are seen by Rhinock and they look curious. They stand upon 4 big legs that prop their bodies up. We retreat further back down the tunnel and are not moving with any sense of urgency. As we start sliding along the floor, casually moving toward our tunnel, we can hear them coming.
We start carving off meat from the Hill Giant that we slew in a previous chamber and will toss it to the 3 Giant Lizards, There are 2 in the front and 1 in back and the rope is still slack.
The walls are rough in this chamber and there is no natural platform. The Giant Lizards approach tentatively. Iona, Rhinock and Jek throw the Hill Giant meat at the Lizards while Iskandar's Sleep spell goes off at the same time.
The Giant Lizards each have 3+1 HD, one of the Lizards falls asleep due to the SLEEP spell. The other two Lizards follow the thrown arm of the Giant and begin licking the arm meat. Meanwhile, the other Lizard begins nibbling on the corpse. Iona and Jek have climbed up the cave walls. Now the tied ropes are a bit taught.
Rhinock gets close to it, about a swords distance away, and the Lizards bare their teeth at him. There is a 2-in-6 chance of the rope failing. At this point, Rhinock just goes to attack. The Lizards have AC 5 and he does 7 damage. One Lizard is still sleeping but the attacked Lizard roars in pain.
Two of the Giant Lizards attack Rhinock, baring their terrible teeth. One Lizard hits for 8 damage to Rhinock and Iskandar summons a Manes Demon, actually 7 Demons! We are using Appendix M for summoned monsters.
One of the Lizards is killed by the Manes Demons and now there is a huge crowd in melee. The Lizard attacks a Manes Demon and does not hurt it. Iona kills the last Lizard after striking for 7 damage! We kill the sleeping Giant Lizard.
Beyond, the entrance cave opens up to some sprawling hills and a gently rolling brook. We can tell that we are looking to the north.
So far we have killed the Hill Giant and three Giant Lizards. We also found several chests and urns with a total of 60,000 coins. We also collected a Giant sack full of platinum.
Currently, the sun is still out and the ruins of Delbo lie to the south. Iona goes to retrieve the cart and horses. Jek and group pull the chests to the entrance. The cave opens up North of Delbo. After an hour, Iona returns with horses, ox and cart. An Ox carries 6,000 coins of weight.
Jek lights a lantern and lights up a warning trap while Rhinock closes the secret door.
Hours pass as we sort the coins. We have divided up around 60,000 coins.
Total includes 20,000 cp, 30,000 sp, 8,000 gp, 1,700 pp.
Rhinock has 1 medium saddlebag (this can hold 200 coins of weight).
We get 425 pp each to carry on our persons.
We have a heavy burden with the carts loaded with treasure. We reduce our load to increase movement.
1700 pp and 4300 gp.
We are not waylaid on the way back.
3700 gp, 2300 sp is retrieved and delivered.
Iona spends 80 gp on a cart and a draft horse.
In the Giant Lizard's chamber we found Wolf bones and Bear bones. The party is returning to this cave so we bypass DELBO and are now returning to the place with the treasure.
Moving between two hills and after a half hour of travel, we suddenly hear from either side some shouts that ring out.
We are flanked by Men with shortbows and there are over 10 on each side, 12 on the other side. They tell us to reveal the location of our treasure. They look like mean, rough men and their group begins descending down the hill.
There are two Leaders and two regular Brigands flanking them. They each lead 10 men.
We attack and Jek does 3 damage to one of the Leaders. Rhinock charges ahead and attacks. He must hit AC 7 for the Brigands.
Rhinock kills one of the Leaders as one Brigand strikes Rhinock for 4 damage. The other Leader strikes with a short sword which is unnaturally bright. He hits Rhinock for 3 damage.
It seems to be a shortsword +2.
Maervahr casts Web but the other Brigands can get there before the Web spell can go off. Jek dodges all their attacks.
Iskandar takes 19 damage and DROPS! Jek takes 1 damage.
Jek then does 1 damage but then withdrawals toward Rhinock. Jek takes 6 damage from a Brigand and also DROPS!
Iona dodges all the attacks!
Rhinock does 6 damage but our companions were laid low by the highwaymen. Iona slaps a Brigand for 1 damage.
Rhinock takes 7 damage but Iona does 7 damage with her spear. Rhinock does 7 damage. The Leader is going for something in his belt before he falls dead. All of the Brigands need to make a morale check,
Iona dodges all the attacks once again but she is then attacked by the leader and others and is dropped to -1 hp.
Rhinock pours the potion down Iona's throat as Rhinock binds the wounds of our companions.
IONA IS INVISIBLE!
The total for our characters is 365 pp and 3941 XP each.
Iskandar was successfully raised!
Next Sunday our party can try another coin-retrieval on the next in-game day and pay your 1:1 time afterward, if we want. Though Iona and Jek are on bedrest for a week, so we would need another set of characters or to play as some Men-at-arms or something (or just hang out for that part).
Iona - 8043 total xp
Jek - 6854 total xp
