Session 195, November 13th, 2024 - RETURN TO SHEEL'SADORIN: Part 3

LOG DATE 11/16/24

  • Xrith'atiril - Endure Heat
  • Thorgard
  • Tatrin
  • Lygan
  • Timbraun
  • Aliisis

ROSE MOON the 23rd, 498

Return to Sheel'sadorin.

Timbraun can cast Haste and he will do so on Xrith'atiril.

The Rod of Passage has been lended to Thorgard for this journey.

Aliisis is the inheritor of Fandillas's stuff and will need to sell all of it, including his spellbooks.

Oil of Earth Elemental Invulerability (id 200) Heavenbringer is id 205.

Tatrin casts Endure Heat on the whole party for 54 turns. Thorgard gives Timbraun a Cure Light Wounds scroll.

We teleport directly into the Ape room and Jacob delivers some wine to them. They are startled by our appearance but love the new wine we have delivered.

The Apes have a pet Pyrohydra that has a gem. There was some discussion of killing the best.

Xrith, Thorgard and Jacob are on doors. All 3 also have a Continual Light. We are on the level with the Apes and are discussing going to grab some of the tags before we go up to the top.

We will head to the tag room by going down the stairs and through the door. There are no encounters along the way. However…

ROLL SURPRISE

Timbraun has a Weasel. We are NOT Surprised!

We are descending the bendy staircase and our light leads us down when Pop, the Weasel familiar detects multiple shadows moving along the wall. There are 4 Shadows.

  • Lygan waits.
  • Timbraun turns undead
  • Aliisis draws Heavenbringer
  • Xrith moves into melee.
  • Jacob charges
  • Thorgard charges.

Timbraun manages to Turn one Shadow which flees down the stairs. The other 3 Shadows charge and are in melee with Jacob and Thorgard. Jacob hits for 9 damage. Thorgard did 13 damage to another.

They obliterate one of the Shadows!

Jacob has -1 AC and Thorgard has -3 AC. They both miss. Xrith joins them in melee while the rest of the party hangs back.

Jacob does 8 damage and Thorgard does 13 damage. Both Shadows are still up.

  • Aliisis approaches closer but looks around for an ambush.
  • Xrith attacks.
  • Jacob attacks.
  • Thorgard attacks.
  • Lygan charges.
  • Timbraun Turns Undead.

Thorgard and Xrith are both attacked, both miss!

Timbraun fails to turn. Thorgard and Jacob destroy the remaining two.

COMBAT ENDS

Heavenbringer dislikes Undead but did not have any new abilities regarding the Shadows. Intelligent swords always want to have an impact and to be used. They get jealous if the bearer uses another sword and try to destroy or not loot another intelligent sword that is encountered.

We go into the door into the windy hallway. The wind is still prevalent. There is a consistent powerful gust of wind from the northern wall, a blasting wind tunnel and cannot hear each other talk. We head for the door with the tags.

The door closes behind us and we enter the Tag room.

There are 8 hooks on the north wall and 8 hooks on the south wall. There are 7 tags on the north wall. The north wall has 7 glowing white tags and the south wall has dark energy on it.

Aliisis concentrates for a round and finds negative energy on the south tags but not like the same type from a lower outer plane, but more like a shadow energy plane or negative energy plane.

Thorgard grabs the dark tag and Jacob the white tag. There is an auditory and visual disruption between the two characters, like heat coming off of a road. There is an energy sound in the air.

Paladins can tell the difference between the lower planes and negative energy planes.

Jacob moves back in the marching order and at 20' apart the disruption disipates.

Lygan moves up to the front to open doors.

We return all the way up to the level with the Sandmen and enter the floral room with the Giant Bees but there are none currently. Eventually, we get through the lounge room and head up the spiral staircase.

The room where the battle once was. The Dead Troglodytes have been stripped of all flesh and muscle. Only bones remain but some paths have been carved through the crystal. The trees are still intact.

Thorgard flips off one of the squirrels. We go up the stairs.

A Move Silently roll is made against us and a Pick Pocket check. We get to the top of the stairs where we find the Elven Inscription on the statue. The rubble from the other statues remains and then Thorgard finds that his Fire Resistance Ring is missing.

We climb back down the stairs and find that there are only 3 Squirrels now. The one that Thorgard flipped off is gone. In the north eastern tree is Key ID 11.

All 3 of the Squirrels run over to Xrith as he presents Thorgards gem to them in exchange for the Ring of Fire Resistance. One squirrel leads us down to the third level. Down the stairs and through the door and then into the northern garden chamber. It runs into the incensed tree and it comes out to the edge of the hall and we follow to the 2nd level and we follow inside the room where we killed a sleeping Owlbear.

The Squirrel comes out holding a gold ring and we exchange it for the gem.

We return to the level we were at previously.

The statue plinth has the following inscription:

“Welcome, champions and magicians, to the final challenge that waits at the end of the halls.”

The Obelisks were built to conceal and gather a family lines treasure. Not all of them are arranged in such a challenging fashion but depends on the constructor of the Obelisk.

Thorgard casts Passwall and we go through where we can see a wavy energy field. There are no markings or symbols. It does not cut through the energy field, just the wall.

Using the black tag, Thorgard tries to walk through the field of energy.

Despite holding the black tag, it feels hard as adamantite. He feels an uncomfortable vibration as his skin get close. The tag does not react to the field either.

Passwall is 5' wide, 10' long, 8' high. The energy field is slighly curved but cuts completely through the stone. Additionally, we notice through examination that the waves of patterns have a bit of a readable aspect to them. They seem like movements on the surface, more active on the north side. Whatever is disturbing the waves is coming from the left side.

Aliisis can sense that there is the same energy of negative energy on the north side. Jacob tries with the white tag and cannot pass. Then they both try to get through together but their close proximity only creates a distortion between them and not the wall.

Timbraun casts Find Traps. We move down the north hallway and not traps are detected. As we come around the corner. We find a 20' hallway that opens to a chamber that is 30' deep. There is a table in here with 12 small glass vials on it and there are 8 laying on the surface and 4 laying on a statuette depicting Aneara. They hang from her arms and all of the tags are not glowing.

There are a total of 4 vials with white tags (not magic). As we approach the table, the white tags depict a winged serpent. Xrith has not heard of a relevance to the Elven people of a serpent but we have heard of a creature that is a feathered winged serpent. It could be Couatl!

On the table are the 4 vials with the liquid. The other vials have a black tag that depicts a Djinn. They also have a liquid that looks identical. Two on each arm with grey tags that are blank. We can see a small amount of tiny bubbles that are floating around gently.

Timbraun does not see any traps. Thorgard starts searching for a panel or something on the desk while Xrith searches the walls for secret doors. Timbraun searches the east wall. Nobody finds anything so Xrith and others search all the walls. We find nothing new after thoroughly searching.

Thorgard carefully examines the walls and uses the Dwarf ability for that.

ROLL SURPRISE

We are surprised.

Thorgard finds nothing sliding and is in melee. Thorgard steps around a corner and immediately sees four towering shapes to his left. Four Owlbears attack! Only two will be able to attack.

Thorgard has a -1 AC when surprised. No hits from the first Owlbear and then only one claw hits from the other. We all hear a terrible roar as Thorgard would have only taken 1 damage!

  • Aliisis cautiously heads down the hall.
  • Xrith charges
  • Jacob charges.
  • Lygan charges.
  • Timbraun moves up.

We are moving at 7 inches which puts us into melee, allowing us to attack at the same time as the Owlbears. Thorgard did 16 damage to one!

Xrith did 7 damage, Jacob did 11 damage, Lygan did 8 damage. The 4 Owlbears have survived the onslaught. They will attack random targets.

2 attacks on Xrith. No hits on the first, but the bite hits for 7. Lygan is hit by a claw and a beak, 21 damage total from both Owlbears.

Jacob gets a second attack. He hits for 14 and Thorgard did 8. They kill two of the Owlbears!

They will Morale check the next round.

  • Timbraun yells to get into melee.
  • Aliisis moves to engage.
  • Xrith attacks.
  • Jacob attacks.
  • Thorgard attacks.
  • Lygan moves towards Timbraun.

Morale check on the Owlbears. The Owlbears look on in horror and they turn to flee!

Magic Missile hits for 13 damage. Lygan hits for 7. Jacob did 10 damage. Thorgard did 9 damage.

Both of the Owlbears escape.

COMBAT ENDS

Aliisis actually aged naturally which gives her 17 Strength and 13 Wisdom!

Lygan is healed for 12 hp.

The vials have Couatls, Djinns and blank gray.

Xrith taps along the walls again to see if there was something we missed. He doesnt find anything extra.

Timbraun inspects one of the vials closely, they have cork stoppers and the string has regular white string and could be untied. Timbraun removes the tag while Xrith picks one up and Jacob unstoppers another. He smells it and finds a blank mild scent to it, like spring water with nutrients. Not any notable fragrance.

The monster is depicted only on one side and with expensive caligraphy ink. There is a thickness on the paper and the color of the ink is only a slightly different color than the tag. The ink reflects the light, like an embossing effect. It gives the impression that the monster is barely visible. When we tilt it, we can barely see the image.

Thorgard suggests putting a white and black vial on the statue of Aneara.

Aliisis asks Heavenbringer if it can detect magic. He concentrates for a round and can Detect Magic up to 1“. She can detect that the vials that have the Couatl and Djinn both have weak magic.

The Gray tagged vials are not magical.

Thorgard puts all the different vial types on the statue of Aneara.

ROLL SURPRISE

Lygan notices that the powerful glow from our lightsources and sees an anomaly down the hall. It is a flicker that is like a light passing through a bowl of water. It is being sprayed wildly in a deep blood red color. It seems to be coming up from the floor.

  • Lygan wants to check it out. Goes to the right hand side.
  • Timbraun Turns Undead.
  • Aliisis draws her weapon.
  • Xrith draws his weapon and stands with Aliisis.
  • Jacob will try to surprise it.
  • Thorgard stands at the opening as a target.

We get into position and the head of a giant snake comes around and we see an enormous giant ruby with a radiant red light. It pokes its head around the corner. It moves its head around as though detecting us.

Timbraun tries to turn undead and can turn Wights. The Snake does not react.

  • Jacob waits.
  • Thorgard charges.
  • Lygan charges.
  • Timbraun casts Haste on Xrith. Nevermind he casts Mirror Image.
  • Aliisis moves into combat.
  • Xrith charges into its face.

An energy begins to build in the forehead of the snake and begins to glow with a powerful ember. We charge forth on segment 4. It is 2 inches away. Xrith and Thorgard will be in melee.

Xrith did 9 damage, Thorgard did 16, Lygan did 7 damage. With a flurry of blows, we decapitate the Snake!

The gem was powerfully charging up, we could feel a heat emanating from it. The Snake is dead.

COMBAT ENDS

We recover the gem.

  • Snake Ruby.

It is a very large Ruby.

Xrith drinks one of the Couatl potions. When he drinks one of the potions, he begins to change in appearance. There is a color shift that happens to his person, his armor and backpack. He gains a purple hue and begins to fade away. His entire form is just a silhouette of his equipment and his body. He is a nebulous purple, static visage.

Xrith cannot communicate with the rest of the party. Jacob says should we also do this and he will drink one. Timbraun also drinks a Couatl potions, as does Thorgard.

Jacob, Thorgard, Timbraun and Xrith all drink the Couatl vials. We cannot exchange information with each other or we will be XP penalized.

All of us can now see a sigil on the west wall that is pouring out black energy. It is identical to the symbols we have seen on the doors, it is a single black tag on the west wall hanging by a hook. All the vials are gone. All of our companions are completely absent.

We cannot see anyone else in our party. There is a hook with the black seal only.

Lygan and Aliisis grab one of the black potions.

One read has passed.

ROLL SURPRISE

For the purple party, we can see each other but can see only the black tag on the west wall. Atmospherically there is this purple static effect all around us. Pop, the Weasel, is not purple and staticky. Timbraun still has all his hitpoints.

We are not surprised. We can hear a movement in the hallway to the north, heavy footprints, like a creeping down the hallway.

  • Xrith grabs the black tag.
  • Jacob steps to hide against the wall.
  • Thorgard steps to the left side.
  • Timbraun casts Ray of Enfeeblement.

2 segments for Ray of Enfeeblement.

Coming around the corner come two Trolls that take deep breaths as though they take in our deaths.

Lygan and Aliisis see two purple static shapes moving down the hallway to engage our party. Do we still have Protection from Evil? Yes, but only half of the effect, a +1.

The two Trolls are not charging so Ray of Enfeeblement goes off and a save versus spells. It Fails! Its attacking strength is reduced by 29%!

Thorgard and Jacob are engaged with the Trolls at the entrance. Xrith has obtained the tag from the hook.

This ends the round.

  • Xrith tries to move through the west wall.
  • Jacob attacks.
  • Thorgard attacks.
  • Lygan sees the static purple silhouettes. He tries to attack.
  • Timbraun casts Light.
  • Aliisis takes a continual light coin to throw at one of us.

Light is 4 segments. Jacob and Thorgard attack and Jacob does 18 while Thorgard does 12. Aliisis throws the continual light coin and it passes through. Lygan takes a swing and it has no effect. Xrith does find that he can pass through the wall so he engages in melee.

Thorgard is attacked by both the Trolls. He is at -7 AC and the first one misses. Second one misses. He fights off both Trolls.

Fighters get their second attacks. Jacob does 10 damage and Thorgard hits for 14 damage. Thorgard destroys one and it has dropped to the ground and is taken out.

Light goes off on the Troll but it saves so the light appears behind it. Xrith is now in melee. Lygan and Aliisis did not see the effect of Light at all.

  • Timbraun lights a torch.
  • Aliisis lights a torch.
  • Xrith attacks.
  • Jacob attacks.
  • Thorgard swears at the Troll.
  • Lygan tries to attack with the cleaver.

The Trolls will not check for Morale. Jacob has a -6 AC and none of the attacks hit.

Xrith hits for 6 damage and Thorgard hit for 7. The Troll is still alive. Timbraun and Aliisis each now have a lit torch. Aliisis torch passes through.

  • Xrith attacks.
  • Aliisis doesnt do much
  • Jacob attacks.
  • Thorgard attacks.
  • Lygan stands there.
  • Timbraun stands.

Both Trolls are naked and gross. Jacob and Thorgard both attack. Thorgard did 14 damage and Jacob missed.

Attack on Jacob, there are no hits. Thorgard hits it for 17 damage! The Troll is felled!

Timbraun lights up the Trolls in fire and there is a foul stench.

COMBAT ENDS

One turn passes after the combat. The two black tags look exactly identical but both react to Jacobs white tag.

We go down the hallway and find a section of the southern wall is missing!

Aliisis and Lygan can see our shapes moving. Lygan grabs all the other vials and they see us standing in the hall.

We see a small room beyond, on the far wall is a glowing white seal that has the same white energy coming from it.

Xrith approaches the seal with the black tag. There is some disruption but the energy on the wall and on his tag are gone. We dont see anything else in the room but we thoroughly search.

Meanwhile, the other party sees the four of us move through the walls.

We search for a while when suddenly the world around us loses its visage and now we find ourselves in an enclosed room. In the center of the far wall we see a keyhole. Key ID 40 fits perfectly. There is a heavy movment of stone on stone. This is with precision tooling and it cleanly bends inward like a double door. The doors pass through a black energy barrier.

The bottom south section of the room is opened and is bisected by a black energy barrier.

The black and white tags do not allow us to pass. However, Passwall lasts for 25 turns! We can see the open space where there is a passwall.

Meanwhile, Pop is running up and down along the wall and stops and thinks and starts squeaking and Lygan and Aliisis. They start searching for a secret. Lygan finds a hidden switch on the wall. It is almost imperceptible. Nothing happens immediately but he can rotate it to the right. There is a heavy stone movement and it grinds open into the wall. They see the hallway.

They can see us in there.

Lygan and Timbraun will stay behind this time so they will try to hide in the statue room.

Jacob, Thorgard, Aliisis and Xrith drink the potions and we become pink and whispy. We are silhouetted in the same way as before. On the eastern wall is a white tag is radiating a white sigil.

ROLL SURPRISE

We catch out of the corner of our eye, two human sized black as night slime things that have crawled around the ceiling. They are coming at us at an alarming speed.

  • Xrith moves to engage.
  • Jacob delayed 1 segment moves to engage.
  • Thorgard moves to engage.
  • Lygan can see the pink whispy shapes on the ceiling.
  • Timbraun tries to Turn Undead.
  • Aliisis tries to stay out of melee to use Protection From Evil but would have to be in melee.

We win initiative. We engage them and they try to drop down on us with a big lurch.

Xrith and Jacob each hit for 11 damage, Thorgard hits for 10 damage. Their cellulose is cut by our weapons.

Thorgard and Xrith are attacked. Thorgard has AC -2, he is hit. Xrith is missed. Thorgard is struck by the Jelly and the acid splashes on him causing 5 damage.

Timbraun's holy symbol has no effect.

Jacob hits for 8 and Thorgard hits for 9. One of the Jellies loses its composition and becomes a liquid substance.

There is now only one left.

  • Aliisis moves to engage.
  • The rest of us attack.

Jacob hits for 9 damage which destroys the final Jelly!

COMBAT ENDS

Aliisis has the white tag. Those of us who are not pink can see us in the room since Lygan opened the secret door. The four pink characters are in the chamber and only us can see the black energy seal on the right. There are streams of powerful energy like spiderwebs that are stretching back from the seal on the black wall.

Aliisis takes the white tag up to the energy seal and they consumer each other. The wall disipates and we can now see a chamber beyond.

We see nothing in the chamber.

But, Lygan and Timbraun can see the following:

A sizable ornate sizable sarcophagus made of petrified wood. It has an ashey sheen and has some purple in some places. It reminds us of the alien trees in the Fae forest when we traveled on the hovering chariot. It has 3 levels to the Sarcophagus with Dryads and Nixies carved into it. It is quite large.

Additionally, there is a large wooden chest in the back made of petrified wood and a smaller wooden coffer made of the same interesting wood. There is a single Scimitar on the sarcophagus that is glowing a faint green color. There is a leather tassle with some beads on it. It looks very sharp.

Lygan grabs the scimitar and waves it around. It is balanced extremely well!

There is an inscription in Elven that is a paragraph long with a line below it that is on the Sarcophagus, facing the entrance to the room.

Xrith starts searching around looking for something on the walls. Aliisis detects weak magic on the gem. Xrith walks through the sarcophagus and starts tapping around while not seeing those items.

Aliisis looks for traps with the sword while Thorgard helps Xrith searching.

After a moment we are regained with the party.

The inscription reads:

Here lies the form of the sorcerer-myrmidon Yisil'denah, friend of the bards, Yisil'denah who stood at the head of a hundred armies, Yisil'denah who raced the night-djinni Rasthemil through the Garden of the Ten Thousand Years and slew him with the Song of the End.

May this spirit happily return.

Xrith and Lygan open the Sarcophagus and we remove the lid and slide it off. Inside is a mummified corpse that is Elf sized. It is tied in silky bandages that look unnatural it is in repose. Along with the body the form is wearing a silver ring with gems. A gold ring with gems a bracelet with gems and a belt with beads of wrought gold. four potion vials, three scrolls, a long rod made of petrified wood, a more purply hue. Like rod caps on a metal rod. On the other side of the body is a tablet that is made of the petrified wood. Adorned with elven women.

It has the following poetic text:

Bards sing of a day when all was haze> The spirits were broken, the sky rose gray> The strength of years had gone away> When Aneara played the secret chord> It shook the Halls, it shattered the Door> The stars grew bright as She sung the Lays> And from the Streets of Death, from the Spires of Life> Rose the Final Song in the Year of Strife

The Rod is powerful magic.

The tablet has a small form. In Xrith's interpretation it is not randomly capitalized.

Timbraun looks at the scrolls.
