In the ruins of Delbo is a keep found in the west side of the ruins. It is one of the two ruined structures that still stand. We have already cleared it out twice in the last few years but it has become occupied yet again by Orcs. Avuin is tasked with located an item of interest: a Halberd that is encrusted with odd colored stones. It is of interest to MELLIAN, a Ranger from the area. He seeks this item because someone else also wants it. This third party have provided Sagely knowledge to Mellian, about THE PIT in the Hills to the north west. It is of interest to Vernum (which is like the UNDERDARK) and is related to Nephilim, who are said to live in Velium (Vernum). Avuin must recover the halberd before it is taken.
The halberd was an original design of Wellso, who originally hired some Adventurers to recover it but they all died by poison from the Orcs. Mellian tells us that he does not know what the PIT is but says that it has only been whispered about or briefly mentioned in ancient tomes. He says that it is located in the hills where we have never been previously. The entrance point has been used by surface people in the past and the location at least seems to exist.
The halberd was originally recovered in these same hills.
For light, Galador has a Continual Light coin and Avuin has a bullseye lantern.
There have been rumors of Bugbears occupying the graveyard at Delbo. As we head out, Randimir will cast Speak with Animals on Sabre, Avuin's Hawk pet, to scout out the area before we head in.
It will take us one day to reach Riknettle and another day to get to Qarn, home of the famous “Qarn Cheese”.
The party sets out from Qarn and once again, we enter the ruined structures of the ancient city of Delbo.
We head toward the west side and Avuin sends out his Hawk called SABRE to scout around, as planned. Once it returns, Speak with Animals is cast by Randimir. The Hawk says that the keep appears to have people standing on top of the walls but there are only a few. There is a group of two legged things that are entering, about halfway between the holes in the walls and the keep proper. They are walking toward the keep with some bigger two legged things. They then begin walking toward a building in the graveyard with several tiny 4-legged things running around in various places. There in the graveyard are also a ton of tiny little things that are not moving that are all over the tombstones and they are as big as an insect over every one.
The last thing that the Hawk saw was something moving among the ruined buildings, small 4 legged things. There was also big, tall two-legged things with a big stick that ducked out of view. The Hawk reports that these things are not food. When we inquire further, the Hawk reports that the two-legged things are about the size of a tall man and the things in the graveyard are bigger than a man and the other thing was lankier, thinner and brown It was a tall man with a big stick.
Delbo's walls are 20' up.
As we approach the walls, due to the geography, people on top of the keep would not be able to peer inside the keep. Avuin lets his Hawk fly up to scout out for immediate danger.
We all roll listen checks and Jedor hears something. He can hear the sounds of someone walking on stone from the south and can hear many sets of boots on the wall, which are pretty thick city walls. Jedor estimates that there are 10 pairs of boots walking past and there are some voices talking in the Orcish tongue. Randimir can also make out the voices and he speaks Orcish, due to his super hearing from his Weasel familiar. He gets the feeling that the Orcs are concerned about the Bugbears that have just shown up as new arrivals. They mention something about the one with the trident in the city.
Avuin goes to climb up first and we scale the wall all the way to the top of the wall. It has a 20' wide walking area.
We are not surprised.
The Orcs are 15” away and AVUIN Charges! We can only charge 12“ so the Orcs are able to fire crossbows. There are 12 of them.
There are 3 shots on Sapphira but all miss and Jedor is targeted by 1, though it missed. There are 2 shots on Avuin and both missed. One shot on Galador also missed. Finally, there are 5 shots upon Frido, some of which bounce off his armor and the rest missed!
We are now 3” away, despite charging, so we now must move to engage, being unable to complete a charge.
Randimir casts his spell and causes Sleep to 6 of them. We are finally engaged in a melee battle.
Avuin attacks with his two-handed sword but the Orcs go first after Falavor shoots. He misses.
Avuin gets an attack and does 8 damage to one Orc. We then kill 3 of the Orcs and 3 others run away. We have some guys shooting at us from the keep but when we hit the ground, we have 50% cover and receive a +4 bonus to AC for cover.
There are 10 Orcs shooting longbows with 12“ range. They have -6 to hit. All of the Orcs missed their targets! The other orcs are running.
Avuin takes out his bow and tries to shoot the running Orcs. Some of the Orcs jump off the wall and into the brambles as they are trying to avoid falling damage. Unfortunately for them, they do not make a successful soft landing. They all died in the fall…
The Orcs on the keep are all shooting and there are only 6 of us. One of the arrows hit Sapphira and she takes 3 damage. Falavor is crawling toward them with a crossbow.
Avuin fires 2 more shots in retaliation and hits for 5 damage, which kills one! There are no hits from the Orcs at all.
Avuin keeps firing and 8 of the Orcs continue firing, not 9.
Galador is not hit and Avuin is in the Protection from Evil radius that a Paladin offers. The Orc has run off and run to the northern wall.
Avuin keeps firing the bow but misses as Sapphira and Jedor run to the wall of the keep. Meanwhile, the Orcs have a couple of juicy targets on the ground. There are No hits on those of us on the ground!
Jedor and Sapphira notice a thick rope on the south wall. Falavor fires but misses as Avuin climbs down. This time, Jedor and Sapphira take 5 damage EACH!
In the meantime, Avuin spotted the Orc on the north wall as it drops down into the keep. We are all down on the ground now.
Sapphira and Jedor each use their lay on hands ability to heal and Avuin runs toward Sapphira and Jedor. Another whole volley of arrows comes down and this time Avuin is hit for 6 damage!
Avuin fires his longbow in response and must hit AC 1. He hits one for 2 damage! Then, the Orcs hit 5 times with 4 arrows on Sapphira and 1 on Jedor. Jedor takes 1 damage as Sapphira takes 9 damage!
Sapphira hits an Orc for 5 damage and Jedor hits for 3 damage. Avuin climbs up the rope. An arrows strikes Falavor and does 2 damage. Then, there is another hit on Sapphira for 5 damage and one hit on Jedor for 4 damage, we are like sitting ducks!
Galador is shot at from multiple arrows but they all miss! Actually, one does hit and he takes 2 damage as Galador fires back and kills one of the Orcs!
Jedor misses and Sapphira misses as Avuin engages them in melee from the top of the keep walls. Meanwhile, a Sleep spell is cast and knocks out 10 of the Orcs!
We engage…
As we move into melee, there are 6 attacks on each character. Sapphira takes 3 damage and another 3 damage from their strikes but Jedor is SAFE! Avuin attacks but misses.
Randimir continues with another Sleep spell and sleeps 10 more Orcs but this is including JEDOR, who is only level 1!
Avuin hits for 16 damage and killed one. There are two attacks that miss Sapphira and 4 attacks on Avuin, all miss!
Avuin is swinging as Randimir casts Hold Person.
ALL OF THE ORCS SAVE VERSUS SPELLS.
None of them are held but Avuin does 17 damage to one and kills it. Then, we kill another one.
In the next round, the Orcs are further back and Avuin misses with his bow. The Orcs are fleeing!
All of the Orcs flee as a Cure Light Wounds is cast on our injured. Sapphira is healed for 7 hitpoints.
We proceed to one of the central buildings inside the keep, after proceeding down the stairs on the wall. Avuin opens the door with Randimir and Galador.
As we push open the door, it reveals a sizable building. This is where the Orcs were sleeping as there are many crude dedrolls. It looks like they cut out part of the ceiling to build a fire. The place is covered in filth and shredded bedding materials.
Avuin sends up his hawk to scout the area and to let out an alert if it sees any enemies. As we search through the refuse in the large building, we only find spare arrows and weapons but this is not enough of a sleeping quarters to cover all the Orcs we faced earlier.
We go through the door that the Orcs escaped through. Our plan is, if we see them, Randimir can cast Stinking Cloud.
Door is held open by a Fighting Man in plate mail and there are 3 Men behind him with longbows.
All of the enemy Archers are targeting Randimir but he has -4 AC due to being behind cover, behind the front lines. The arrows all miss!
At this point, the Stinking Cloud spell goes off and only one of the enemies saved versus spells! Avuin fires his bow and he automatically hits. He makes an Assassination attempt due to the enemies being helpless in the Cloud. He hits and does 6 damage to the plate wearing Fighter.
Falavor assassinates one of the leather wearers and Randimir assassinates the other plate wearer.
We wait before moving forward and then after two minutes, the Stinking Cloud gas dissippates.
The party moves in and we open both doors.
We spot two people wearing robes in the back and two other guys in the back “coughing and hacking” out their lungs. One of them is another plate wearer but this one is a BIG GUY. He is about 7 1/2 feet tall and there are 4 Orcs in here as well.
The plate wearer bears the quest item, the Great Stone Encrusted Halberd!
The Orcs retaliate and Frido takes 1 damage. At the same moment, a Sleep spell is cast. Some of us that can be affected are as follows:
Falador did 3 damage to one of the Magic-Users. RETCON, actually he did not hit!
Jedor found a jade necklace and a vial of liquid in the other room…RETCON, but he did not because he is asleep!
All of the Orcs miss their attacks and the plate mail wearer misses Avuin. Next, the 7' tall plate wearer moves to attack Randimir with the gemmed halberd but MISSES!
The big plate wearer has an AC 1/3. Avuin misses but keeps attacking the big guy. Meanwhile, the 4 Orcs continue their attacks:
One of the robed Magic-Users disappears! There is now only a wall there and it is like he just faded away.
Randimir and Avuin both attack. Avuin hits and does 25 damage against the large Fighter but he is STILL ALIVE! There are no hits from the Orcs and the other Fighter missed! Then, the big plate wearer with the halberd hits Randimir for 6 damage!
Avuin attacks again and does 16 damage. HE KILLS THE BIG PLATE WEARER WITH THE HALBERD! Then, Avuin targets the other plate mail Figher.
Avuin hits again and does 10 damage to the other plate wearer! In the next round, Avuin attacks and this time hits an Orc for 11 damage and kills it. Meanwhile, Galador is hit for 1 damage by the plate wearer.
Avuin then charges the leather armor wearing enemy and does 13 damage, but he is still alive! He then does another 12 damage to the leather wearer and he drops!
Galador kills the plate wearer and the other Magic-User is killed!
